New evidence has emerged for a link between antioxidant bioactive supplements and increased cancer growth. Experiments on cancerous tissues of animals and humans confirm that they accelerate the growth of melanoma, one of the most dangerous tumors.

“Antioxidants are not a cure for cancer. They won't work at best, but they can make the disease worse,”says Kristell Le Gal Beneroso, a PhD candidate at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

The idea that antioxidants protect against cancer through their ability to neutralize so-called free radicals has been challenged in several studies in recent years. It became clear that antioxidants protect not only normal cells, but also cancer cells.

The same Gothenburg-based research team led by Professor Martin Bergö has previously shown that metastasis of melanoma and lung cancer is enhanced by the use of certain antioxidants.

Christell Le Gal Beneroso studied how lung cancer and melanoma cells in humans and mice respond to the presence of certain antioxidants. The latter binds to mitochondria, which are responsible for the synthesis of free radicals.

“In theory, binding to mitochondria would reduce free radical synthesis, prevent DNA damage leading to cancer,” she said.

But the data from this experiment supported the idea that antioxidants can be harmful by accelerating cancer growth.

“Hypothetically, you can help your healthy cells, but there is not enough evidence that this is happening in this case. On the other hand, we borrow that if a person has cancer, even if it has not been diagnosed, antioxidants can increase tumor growth,”concludes Christell Le Gal Beneroso.
