Patients with heart disease should be advised to move every 20 minutes to prolong life. This is evidenced by data from a study presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, held October 20-23 in Toronto.

According to research, patients with heart disease spend most of their waking hours sitting, lying down and watching television. It was previously known that prolonged immobility shortens the years of life, and movement prolongs them. Burning more than 770 calories a day has been reported to help prolong the life of patients with heart disease. In this new study, scientists determined how often and for how long a person must move to get this level of exercise.

“Our research shows that patients with heart disease need to get up and move every 20 minutes, while doing light exercise for at least 7 minutes. Simple activities like getting up and walking at a normal pace will burn more than 770 calories a day if done often enough and regularly,”says study author Dr. Ailar Ramadi of the University of Alberta. …

The study involved 132 patients with ischemic heart disease, their average age was 63 years. Participants wore the activity sensor for 22 hours a day for five days. It recorded the amount of energy expended during physical activity, as well as the number and duration of active and inactive periods.

According to the authors, this load provides the burning of 770 kcal per day, which is associated with a decrease in the risk of premature death.

On the downside to this study, Professor Joep Perk, of the European Society of Cardiology, noted that this is a small observational study without a control group. “Before making any specific recommendations, there is still a need for a randomized controlled trial. The ECO guidelines for the prevention of cardiovascular disease suggest a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of increased activity per week.
