Exercise is a very effective medicine. A sedentary lifestyle is far more dangerous to health than smoking, diabetes and heart disease, according to a new study published in the JAMA Network Open.

A sedentary lifestyle is far more dangerous to health than smoking, diabetes and heart disease, according to a new study published in the JAMA Network Open.

Study author Dr. Wael Jaber, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, said the study was "extremely surprising."

Jaber argues that avoiding exercise should be considered as much a risk factor as hypertension, diabetes and smoking, and perhaps more than all of them combined.

“If you are not physically active, then it should be treated like a disease for which there is a remedy - exercise,” says Jaber.

Researchers retrospectively studied 122007 patients who were tested on a treadmill at the Cleveland Clinic from January 1, 1991 to December 31, 2014 to assess their all-cause mortality and the benefits of exercise.

Jaber said another finding from the study is that fitness leads to longer life and aerobic exercise provides unlimited health benefits. Researchers have always been concerned that those who exercise in excess may be at increased risk of death, but research has shown that this is not the case.

“There is no level of exercise or fitness that increases the risk,” Jaber says.

The benefits of exercise were observed in all age groups, both men and women, although, according to Jaber, it manifested itself more clearly in women. What was shocking was his comparison of the results of those who did physical exercise with those who did not.

“We all know that being inactive or not exercising increases the risk of death. But I was surprised that in this case the risk exceeds even the risk factors for smoking, diabetes and even for a number of diseases at the last stage. People who perform poorly on the treadmill are almost twice as likely to have kidney failure on dialysis,”Jaber says.

The uniqueness of the study lies not only in the large number of participants, but also in the fact that the researchers did not rely on the words of the patients themselves, but on the test results. Those who lead a sedentary lifestyle had a 500% higher risk of death compared to those who are most physically active, and three times higher than smokers. Those who exercise little compared to those who exercise regularly had a 390% higher risk.
