Erectile dysfunction and sexual dysfunction are companions of the "adult entertainment business"

In the "adult entertainment business," one in four women suffer from sexual dysfunction, and half of men rely on medication to get an erection. This is indicated by two original studies by urologist Justin Dubin at the University of Miami.

In the "adult entertainment business," one in four women suffer from sexual dysfunction and half of men rely on medication to get an erection. This is indicated by two original studies by urologist Justin Dubin of the University of Miami.

“Increased attention has been paid to the impact of pornography on the people who watch it, but no one has paid attention to the sexual function of the people who perform it,” said Dr. Dubin.

Treatment of erectile dysfunction (there are porn actors among patients) is part of his work: “I often see patients who are young, healthy, according to documents they should not have sexual dysfunction, but it does. This is alarming. The misconception about how they should act is based on what they are looking at."

The first study, jointly with Dr. Ranjith Ramasamy, was published in April this year in The Journal of Urology of the American Neurological Association. It was attended by 100 men aged 28 to 45 years.

More than a third of them had clinical erectile dysfunction; 69% used special pills at work, and 58% - both during work and for personal reasons. The majority of users of Viagra-type pills (84%) turned out to be young men aged 20-29 years.

The second study, presented in October at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine conference, involved 100 women with an average age of 34 years.

Sexual dysfunction (pain during sex, low libido, and difficulty with orgasm) was found in 24% of women. They reported low levels of satisfaction in all settings. Whereas in the absence of sexual dysfunction, women received satisfaction at home - in the usual, homosexual or bisexual way.

Thus, FSD [female sexual dysfunction] is often not the result of work: "There are many more factors … so it is difficult to define individual characteristics when it comes to FSD."

Justin Dubin summarizes that erectile dysfunction is usually work-related, while women's problems are more natural, medical. Any woman can suffer from them, not just porn actresses.

In general, these studies are of great social importance. On the one hand, they will help solve problems of this kind for performers. Michael Stabile, director of communications for the Free Speech Coalition, a nonprofit trade association for the pornography and adult entertainment industry in the United States, called it a good start because “the industry is dependent on performers, and we know healthier performers are better able do your job."

On the other hand, the level of anxiety will decrease among the rest of the population, who often develop sexual dysfunctions due to their apparent inadequacy. "There is not much sex in the general population, with almost the same frequency or almost the same amount of time," so comparing yourself to professionals is useless.

“Once we gain insight into their work, what they do and how it affects them, this understanding can help with perception, it will go a long way towards addressing the growing trend in sexual dysfunction in both genders,” concluded Justin Dubin.
