Pregnant women who get vaccinated against the flu are 40% less likely to end up in hospital as a result of complications of the disease, a new American study shows.
“Expectant mothers face a number of threats to their health and the health of their baby during pregnancy. And one of these threats is flu. Our results underscore the fact that there is a simple but effective way to reduce the chances of complications from influenza during pregnancy is to get a flu shot,”said study co-author Allison Naleway of the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research) in Portland.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 2 million pregnant women in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Israel between 2010 and 2016. The results of the study were published October 11 in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
The flu shot was equally protective of the health of women during all three trimesters of pregnancy, including women with conditions such as asthma and diabetes, the researchers said. More than 80% of pregnancies in the study were during flu season, highlighting the fact that many mothers are exposed to the virus at some point in their pregnancy.
Previous research has also shown that getting a flu shot can reduce your risk of getting the flu during pregnancy. The same study shows that vaccination also reduces the risk of hospitalization for complications associated with the flu, such as pneumonia.
Influenza poses an increased risk to women during pregnancy due to changes occurring in their immune system, as well as in the heart and lungs. Women are also very susceptible to this flu-related illness during the first two weeks after pregnancy. In addition, the vaccine given during pregnancy then protects the baby during the first months of life, until he is old enough to receive a separate flu shot.
In the United States, only about half of pregnant women reported having a flu shot during the flu season. There are no reliable Russian statistics on this issue.
