Every year the publication publishes a list of the leading higher education institutions around the world. Data for it, provided by Thomson Reuters, includes a survey of experts, an analysis of university activities and audit information. Each university is assessed in the following areas: teaching, research, citation, technology commercialization and international relations - a total of 13 indicators with different weights.

In the published part of this year's ranking, there are more than 1250 universities in the world from 86 countries. In total, it included 35 Russian universities (a year ago there were 27). The best indicators are at the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov (he shared 199-200 place with the Canadian University of Calgary). The first place in the ranking was taken by the University of Oxford (UK), followed by Cambridge (UK) and Stanford (USA) universities.
