The most common visual defect - myopia - occurs today in every third school graduate. And every tenth baby reaches the age of three with strabismus. The reasons for this are different, but most of them are completely preventable, the main thing is that parents know about this and do not make mistakes, the cost of which can be the sight of their child, experts say. We investigate the main parental delusions with the President of the Association of Ophthalmologists and Strabismologists, an ophthalmologist-surgeon, Dr. med. Igor Aznauryan.

Early development helps to grow genius

Fashion for early child development is often detrimental to his health and can lead to eye disease. Unless, of course, parents adhere to basic safety rules. So, intensive drawing, reading, spelling with a child under three years old requires frequent changes in activities. The fact is that neither the nervous nor the visual systems of a child, which are formed up to 3-4 years old, are not ready for premature excessive stress. Therefore, the most optimal training scheme for children of this age: 20 minutes of classes, 15 minutes of rest.

The second and perhaps the most important reason for the development of vision problems is that during long sessions, the child's eyes focus on one plane and at the same distance from the object. And this has a detrimental effect on vision, because the ciliary muscle must work both near and far. And here is the advice: we had sex with the child - then we counted the birds outside the window, thus forcing our eyes to “work” at near and far distances.

Some modern mothers have nothing against their babies mastering the tablet - these are both modern technologies and educational games. But it is very dangerous to teach children to use smartphones from a young age. The main danger of the tablet is that it is not fixed, it shakes all the time in the child's hands, the eye is forced to constantly "readjust" and overstrain. This provokes the early development of eye diseases. Let's face it: you can develop a child even without a tablet - after all, we somehow grew up without gadgets!

You will not get up from the table until you do your homework

And this is a common mistake of parents of grown-up children. Schoolchildren are no longer toddlers and they need much more to do. Parents teach them to be industrious, disciplined, and at the same time spoil their eyesight. And then they blame poor lighting in the classroom, uncomfortable desks and a child who slouches too much and leans close to a notebook when writing. At the same time, few people realize that myopia develops not at school, but at home while doing homework.

At school, every 40 minutes there are changes, plus during the lessons the gaze switches to the blackboard, then to the notebook, so the ciliary muscle works at different distances. At home, the child sits at textbooks for an hour or two, and if interrupted, then on a smartphone. As a result - the same type of continuous load close. And if the child is still working not at the table, but on the bed or on the floor, then the visual system becomes even more strained, because the distance between the eye and the object is constantly changing.

Therefore, parents need to ensure that the child, while doing homework, takes breaks every hour. And it is better to load him with chores around the house during these breaks - to wash the dishes, clean up his room. Let his eyes rest.

Anti-glare glasses when working with a computer help preserve vision

Another common mistake made by parents of teenage children. It has already been proven that modern monitors do not have harmful radiation. This means there is no point in protecting your eyes from glare. Therefore, anti-glare glasses will not do any good or harm. But on condition that the child does not have formed vision problems. But if there are already problems, then such an imaginary "protection" can become dangerous, because the time for the necessary treatment will be lost. Therefore, the main assistant in the prevention and treatment of vision is an ophthalmologist.

My child's eyes are fine, why go to an ophthalmologist?

A common reason for the loss of precious time is that the child does not complain about poor vision. And parents believe that going to an ophthalmologist is not necessary. But, unfortunately, the child himself cannot always understand that his vision is deteriorating. For example, if vision falls in one eye, and the other continues to work with the same acuity, then the child will see, as before, and will not notice the changes.

Moreover, in appearance you cannot draw conclusions about such diseases as astigmatism, amblyopia, anisometropia - only an ophthalmologist can see this. Therefore, preventive examinations by an ophthalmologist should be held annually, even if it seems to you that everything is fine. For a preschooler, there is a regular visit to an ophthalmologist: 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years. If no deviations are found, then you can come to the next appointment in front of the school at the age of 6.

Why go to an ophthalmologist so often? First, so as not to miss deviations from the norm. And, secondly, most eye pathologies are inherited, even myopia. For example, according to statistics, if one of the parents has reduced vision, then 50%, which will also be the case for the child. And if both parents are myopic, then the probability that the child will develop myopia also reaches 80%. A competent ophthalmologist should not only diagnose myopia, but also stabilize it, stop the decline in vision.

Blueberry Supplements Improve Eyesight

This is the most common misconception of parents. Blueberry dietary supplements, lutein tablets, carrots - all this has no effect on the visual system. Of course, the child's diet should be enriched with vitamins, but this is not help for eye diseases. Let's say that the child's eye pathology is inherited, but hereditary diseases, unfortunately, cannot be cured with dietary supplements and carrots.

Unsystematic hardware treatment

If necessary, the ophthalmologist prescribes outpatient, conservative treatment for the child, which is popularly called "hardware". This treatment is indicated for pathologies such as amblyopia, myopia, hyperopia, strabismus, astigmatism. Many parents believe in hardware treatment as a panacea for vision loss. But it is not enough just to bring the child to sit at the apparatus. The main thing is to get adequate and effective therapy that will help stop the growth of myopia. The devices are the same everywhere, the treatment regimens are standard, but the children are all different. Therefore, in each specific case, an individual approach is needed. Otherwise, the child can be "healed" so that it will only get worse.

Before starting treatment, it is necessary to diagnose all the visual functions of the child. Additional examinations will not interfere. For example, encephalography. The fact is that an outwardly healthy child may have functional changes in the brain, which in ordinary life do not appear in any way. And it is very important to see these lesions before starting treatment. Because among the devices there are also those that emit light or flicker with different lights. These lights, like catalysts that stimulate the brain, can trigger seizures in a child. In addition, hardware treatment is effective only in combination with medication. Modern ophthalmologists use electrophoresis - with its help, the medicine can be delivered to the desired area of the eye. This increases the effectiveness of the procedure.

If parents start working on mistakes and gradually abandon harmful stereotypes, then perhaps very soon we will record a decrease in the epidemic of myopia

How to understand that a child's vision has begun to decrease

Several characteristic signs should alert parents:

the handwriting has changed for the worse - it has become larger, "clumsy"

  • the child leans too low on the notebook
  • when watching TV, the child does not sit on the couch, but comes right up to the screen itself
  • the child squints when trying to see something in the distance
  • What to do if your child has myopia

You need to clearly understand the sequence of actions. First, together with the doctor, you should stop myopia, and then try to take off your glasses. Modern ophthalmology can do this with the help of hardware and drug treatment, as well as laser vision correction.
