Probiotics are the "good bacteria" that many expect to help with any intestinal problem, and are often prescribed by doctors in parallel with antibiotic treatment. New research suggests they may not be as useful as expected.

The gut microbiome is the sum of all microorganisms living in the human intestine. It has been shown to play a significant role in human health.

Research has shown that probiotics, usually taken in the form of dietary supplements or drinks (yogurt, kefir), can interfere with the restoration of a normal human microbiome. Different people react to probiotics in very different ways.

In the first study, published in Cell, scientists performed a series of endoscopies and colonoscopies to take a sample of people's microbiomes before and after taking probiotics. Another group of people received microorganisms that were collected from their intestines before taking antibiotics.

Scientists saw that the microbiome of people receiving probiotics was significantly affected. After the probiotic bacteria colonized the gut, they suppressed the restoration of a person's own microbiome, disrupted by the use of antibiotics. Also, gene expression was disrupted, that is, the process of synthesizing proteins on DNA.

In the group that received their own bacteria, such negative changes were not observed, their gut microbiome was restored in a few days.

Scientists have also found that examining bacteria in human feces cannot be a reliable way to study the state of the gut microbiome.

In a second study, researchers looked at probiotic-induced alteration of the gut microbiome. One group received the common probiotics, the other a placebo.

The authors were surprised to find two different reactions to probiotics. In some people, the intestines resisted colonization by these bacteria, in others, probiotics "took root", changed the microiomes and influenced the work of DNA. This shows that the current concept of probiotics that fit everyone equally needs to be replaced by a more personalized approach.

These studies did not study the clinical effect of probiotics, scientists are going to conduct new research in this direction.
