Seniors are not interested in sex

According to a recent study by the US National Poll on Healthy Aging, most Americans in the 65-80 age group believe sex is important to quality of life. Almost two-thirds of the respondents reported that they are interested in sex.

Erectile dysfunction or vaginal dryness can occur due to age-related health problems or the use of medications, which often reduces the frequency of sexual activity. However, sexual experience combined with increased intensity can enhance sexual satisfaction even as a person is getting older.

Habits don't matter, genetics dictate everything

“Your lifestyle, what you use, and most importantly, your way of thinking - these factors have more influence than genes. Your genes can change based on diet, exercise, meditation, and exposure to chemicals. You create your own genetic bank,”says Dr. Christopher Calapai.

For example, even if a person is at genetic risk for developing Alzheimer's disease, they should not ignore the factors that can influence the risk, such as physical activity or mental inactivity, smoking, obesity - all of which can make a huge difference in the long term.

As we age, the brain stops producing new cells

A recent study has shown that new cells are forming in the brains of even those 79 years old. “We found that the brain of older people has the ability to create thousands of new hippocampal neurons from progenitor cells, just as it does in younger people,” said lead author Dr. Maura Boldrini.

The research team also found the equivalent size of the hippocampus, which is the structure needed for emotion formation and cognition in all age groups. According to researchers, the reason some people experience a decline in mental performance as they age is due to the difficulty in blood flow.

Boldrini also emphasized the importance of physical activity and mental performance in reducing the risk of cognitive decline.

Exercise is dangerous for older people

Physical activity is highly recommended for people of all ages. Seniors also need regular exercise with adequate precautions to avoid falling or injuring themselves, and to improve symptoms of certain diseases, such as diabetes, for example.

“There is a widespread myth that aging means decrepitude. But this is not true. Some in their 70s, 80s and 90s run marathons and become bodybuilders,”says Dr. Chhanda Dutta, head of the National Institute on Aging's Clinical Gerontology Department.

People inevitably become sad or depressed as they get older

According to Dr. Robert Roca, chairman of the American Psychiatric Association's Council on Geriatric Psychiatry, depression in old age is often caused by personal loss.

“People lose their loved ones and friends, and when they retire, they lose their professional identity, their physical strength decreases, and they cannot do as much as they used to,” says Dr. Roca.

He added that this is not the norm for aging, as older people are not more likely to be depressed than younger people. By seeking help and being screened for the causes of depression, older people can get help and live more active and happier lives.
