At a meeting of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, one of the participants, Doctor of Biological Sciences Eduard Karamov, professor at the Institute of Virology named after D. I. Ivanovsky, said that a new dangerous type of human immunodeficiency virus had appeared in Russia. According to Professor Karamov, in Russia, unlike other countries, the A1 strain is most often found, and along with migrants from Central Asia, another type of virus came to Russia - AG. As a result of mixing, a new strain appeared - A63. The virologist assessed the degree of danger of the new type of HIV as high.

Eduard Karamov came up with an initiative to create an interdepartmental commission that would study the process of the emergence of new strains of HIV in order to prevent and combat infection of the population. According to the scientist, the leading role in such a commission should be played by the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In November, academician Vadim Pokrovsky said that according to official statistics alone, there are more than 1 million HIV-positive people in Russia, but in fact this number could be much higher. The head of the Federal Scientific and Methodological Center for the Prevention and Control of AIDS noted that a generalized HIV epidemic has already been recorded in 15 regions of Russia, and the number of patients is growing. In 2015, Russia became one of the three countries with the most cases of infection.
