A Spanish nurse who contracted the Ebola virus while caring for two infected priests at a Madrid hospital is recovering, Reuters reports. Last Sunday, Theresa Romero, 44, who was hospitalized with fever earlier this month, tested negative for Ebola. Another test should be done 72 hours later.

A Spanish nurse who contracted the Ebola virus while caring for two infected priests at a Madrid hospital is recovering, Reuters reports. Last Sunday, Theresa Romero, 44, who was hospitalized with fever earlier this month, tested negative for Ebola. Another, control, test should be done 72 hours later.

The nurse was treated with serum antibodies isolated from survivors of the infection, as well as other medications. One of the experimental drugs that the patient received was favipiravir.

Romero became the first person to contract Ebola outside West Africa. Fifteen other people are currently under observation in the hospital, including the nurse's husband.

Ebola has already killed 4,546 people in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday.
