Russia has created a reserve of antibacterial drugs [in case of emergencies]

The reserve included 25 thousand packages of Intest-bacteriophage, the action of which is directed against a wide range of bacteria that cause various diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, and five thousand packages of staphylococcal and dysentery bacteriophage.

A strategic reserve of antibacterial drugs has appeared in Russia. It was created in case of emergencies like the recent flood in the Crimea, Krasnodar Territory and Rostov Region, ITAR-TASS reports. Experts expect that, if necessary, this will help to prevent infections in a large number of victims of natural disasters.

The reserve included 25,000 packs of Intesty-bacteriophage, the action of which is directed against a wide range of bacteria that cause various diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, and 5,000 packs of staphylococcal and dysentery bacteriophage produced by Microgen. The Ministry of Health said that these drugs are an effective, budgetary and safe way to prevent and treat bacterial infections.

“In our time, when antibiotic resistance is increasing significantly, and new drugs are being produced very slowly, an alternative method of treatment is needed and it has long been known: bacteriophages were actively used in the 20th century,” said Nikolai Malyshev, chief specialist in infectious diseases at the Moscow Department of Health.

Bacteriophages were actively used as a prophylactic agent during floods in the Far East in 2013. Then 70 thousand doses of Intest-bacteriophage were transferred to the affected regions. In 2014, the flood affected areas of the Altai Territory and the Republic of Khakassia, and more than eight thousand packages of dysentery and Salmonella bacteriophages and Intestbacteriophage were delivered there.
