According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 50,000 new cases of immunodeficiency virus infection are registered in the country every year, and about 16% of the 1.1 million HIV-positive citizens do not know about it.

In 2008, a laboratory test showed a positive result for HIV in "AO", and, despite the fact that the man was consulted about his condition and informed about the need to practice safe sex, between 2010 and 2014 he contracted the infection from at least eight people.

In case of failure to comply with the requirements specified by the court, the man could face a fine or imprisonment. “We're not criminalizing sexual activity, we're protecting public health,” Matthew Golden, the county's head of public health, told The Seattle Times.
