British citizens Brett King and Naghmeh King took five-year-old Ashiya, who had been tube fed from Southampton General Hospital after surgery for aggressive brain cancer, on the afternoon of 28 August. According to Brett, doctors told the family the day before that the boy was hopeless and would die within the next four months. At the same time, they refused to try to apply the proton therapy method to Ashiya, which Brett learned about from the Internet. This method of radiation therapy is widely used in Europe, but to a limited extent - in the UK, where the cost of the course is 100 thousand pounds sterling per patient. According to Brett, the doctors told him that proton therapy would not help in Ashiya's case.

After picking up the boy from the hospital, the King family, which, in addition to Ashia, have six other children, took a ferry to France, and then arrived by car in Spain, where they stopped near Malaga. According to one of the King's sons, 20-year-old Naveed King, for the trip to Spain, the family stocked up with all the necessary medical equipment, including a probe feeding system with a charger and a supply of power itself, similar to that which Ashiya received in the hospital, so additional there was no damage to the boy's health.

After Brett and Nagme King were arrested at the request of the Hampshire County Police and taken to Madrid, Ashia was admitted in satisfactory condition to the Malaga Children's Hospital. None of his relatives are allowed to see him. On September 1, the King spouses will appear before the court, which will have to answer the question whether their act is a manifestation of cruelty towards the child and, depending on the answer, decide on the release of Ashiya's parents or their extradition to the UK. Thousands of people have already signed an online petition to release Brett and Nagme King, and the family has received many offers of financial assistance for Ashiya's treatment.
