In China, due to the threat of bubonic plague [blockaded the city]

Chinese authorities have sealed off part of the city of Yumen in northwestern Gansu province and quarantined 151 people amid the threat of bubonic plague. On July 16, a resident of the city, a 38-year-old man, died of the disease, presumably after contact with a dead marmot, which he fed to his dog. No other cases of plague have been reported in the region.

Chinese authorities have sealed off part of the city of Yumen in northwestern Gansu province and quarantined 151 people amid the threat of bubonic plague, the BBC reported, citing state-run Xinhua news agency.

On July 16, a resident of the city, a 38-year-old man, died of the disease, presumably after contact with a dead marmot, which he fed to his dog. No other cases of plague have been reported in the region.

The authorities reportedly set aside four quarantine zones in 30,000 Yumen and the neighboring small town of Chijin, setting up ten checkpoints around them. Residents are prohibited from leaving the blocked area. 151 people who came into contact with the deceased were isolated and put in quarantine for nine days.

The last case of bubonic plague in Yumen was recorded in 1977, and five cases of infection have been recorded in Gansu province over the past decade.

Bubonic plague is the most common form of the disease in humans, which develops when the pathogen penetrates the skin, usually with the bite of an infected flea. It is characterized by inflammation of the lymph nodes and general intoxication. The incubation period is usually 2-6 days. The transmission of infection from person to person becomes possible by airborne droplets during the transition of the disease to the pulmonary form.
