A Chicago resident who suffered a stroke after taking the Yasmin contraceptive pill manufactured by the German pharmaceutical concern Bayer for two weeks will receive $ 14 million in compensation from the doctor who prescribed her the drug, ABCNews reported.

The drug was prescribed to 37-year-old Mariola Zapalski in 2007 due to her irregular period. The woman took the medication for 13 days until she had a stroke, which left her paralyzed on the left side. Since then, Zapalski has been confined to a wheelchair, her speech function is impaired. The woman needs constant care, which is why her husband had to leave work and devote himself entirely to caring for his wife.

In Zapalski's lawsuit against the doctor who appointed Yasmin, it was indicated that he did not take into account the presence of risk factors for blood clots in the patient and did not prescribe a remedy for her with a similar effect, but with a reduced content of the hormone estrogen, or based only on the hormone progesterone. The court, after a two-week trial, agreed with the arguments of the plaintiff and issued a verdict according to which the doctor must pay Zapalski and her husband $ 14 million in compensation for the damage caused to the woman's health.

This is the second verdict in this case - a month ago the court ordered the clinic where Zapalski's attending physician, Resurrection Medical Center, pay the woman $ 2.5 million in compensation.

The very popular in the USA Yasmin ("Yarina") and another oral contraceptive manufactured by Bayer, Yaz ("Jess"), contain the estrogen hormone ethinyl estradiol and the synthetic progestogen (steroid hormone) drospirenone. In 2013, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered changes to the instructions for these and other estrogen-containing drugs, warning of an increased risk of deep vein thrombosis.

The Zapalski decision is the latest in a string of health claims against Yasmin and Yaz. So, in the first half of April it became known that Bayer would pay $ 110 million to 550 women who filed a lawsuit against the company under the settlement agreement. Consumers claim that the use of these oral contraceptives caused them heart attacks and strokes, which became a consequence of the formation of blood clots. More than 11,000 similar lawsuits are currently pending in the US courts.
