Although the number of victims of a new type of coronavirus that causes the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) with characteristic acute pneumonia and acute renal failure is relatively small, however, the high mortality rate of infection and the spread of the virus outside the Middle East forces the health authorities to carefully track and prevent its spread as far as possible.

There is still no vaccine against this viral infection; according to recent studies, camels may be a natural focus of the disease.

To date, MERS cases have been reported in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman and Tunisia, as well as in several European countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday that since 2012, when the new type of coronavirus was first isolated, a total of 212 laboratory-confirmed cases of MERS infection have been reported, of which 88 have been fatal.

In Saudi Arabia, the spread of a new strain of coronavirus among medical personnel has led to the quarantine of the emergency department at the main public hospital in Jeddah, which has a population of more than 3.6 million. In connection with the panic that arose in this regard, the country's health minister, Abdullah al-Rabiah, visited city hospitals on Saturday to check on their condition and reassure residents.
