Due to an IVF error [Italian woman bears another's twins]

In Italy, a scandal erupted around the infertility clinic at the Sandro Pertini hospital in Rome. During the IVF procedure at the clinic, the embryos were confused, as a result of which one of the patients now bears twins, the biological parents of which are the other couple.

In Italy, a scandal erupted around the infertility clinic at the Sandro Pertini hospital in Rome. According to AFP with reference to the newspaper La Stampa, during the IVF procedure at the clinic, the embryos were mixed up, as a result of which one of the patients now bears twins, the biological parents of which are the other couple.

As it turned out, the embryo change took place on December 4, when four patients of the clinic were simultaneously undergoing an IVF procedure with the doctor Giuseppe Novelli. The fact that one of the women was carrying children genetically alien to her became known only at the end of March, when the gestation period had already exceeded three months. It is not yet clear whether the mistake resulted in another patient being pregnant with someone else's child.

The Italian Ministry of Health, as well as local regulatory authorities, have already launched an investigation into the situation, temporarily suspending all artificial insemination procedures at the Sandro Pertini clinic. In particular, it remains to be seen whether this is an isolated case and to what extent national and European standards for performing artificial insemination procedures were observed in the clinic.
