The World Health Organization has reported that the death toll from the Ebola virus has crossed the 100 mark. According to a WHO spokesman, “this is one of the most difficult to control Ebola outbreaks” they have ever encountered.

To date, 101 people have died from Ebola in Guinea and 10 more in neighboring Liberia. In addition, 157 cases of suspected viral infection were registered in Guinea, of which 67 people were laboratory-confirmed for the Ebola virus. Liberian authorities have reported 21 suspicious clinical cases, five of which have already been confirmed. Mali also admitted nine patients with suspected Ebola; laboratory tests have refuted two such cases.

Last week, the Mali authorities announced tightening of border controls due to the threat of the spread of the Ebola virus. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia suspended visas for Muslim pilgrims from Guinea and Liberia.

“The outbreak of the Ebola epidemic is expected to continue for another two to four months before we can say it is over,” WHO Assistant Director General Keija Fukuda told Reuters.
