Since March 2012, Ozarowski has launched an extensive fundraising campaign for her treatment through a dedicated website and Facebook page, reaching out directly to local businessmen, her neighbors, and even standing outside with a poster. The girl claimed to be suffering from aggressive bone cancer that metastasized to the spine and brain. Ozarovski's gaunt appearance, weighing just over 36 kilograms, contributed to the successful fundraising. On her website, the girl even posted photographs of her sitting in a wheelchair.

As it turned out, Ozarovski managed to mislead not only the public, but also her family - the girl's father gave her all his retirement savings, and the grandmother sold the house and gave her granddaughter $ 100,000 for cancer treatment.

By April 2013, when she was arrested, Ozarovski managed to collect about $ 10,000 from benefactors. By this time, four cases for drug use had already been initiated against the girl. “There is no cancer, no chemotherapy, no radiation therapy, no treatment bills. There is only heroin,”the district attorney said at the time.

The prosecution demanded that Ozarovski be sentenced to seven years in prison, but the court limited itself to a relatively lenient sentence. The girl must return the allegedly collected 10 thousand dollars for treatment, as well as spend two years in a drug rehabilitation center and a year in community service. If these requirements are violated, Ozarovski faces four years in prison.
