A team of doctors from the Oncology Center and the Institute of Oncology in Gliwice (Poland) under the guidance of surgeon Adam Maciejewski performed the second complete facial tissue transplant in Poland. The patient is a 26-year-old girl named Joanna who suffers from neurofibromatosis. Due to the huge swelling of the facial tissues, the girl could not chew, swallow and speak.

A team of doctors from the Oncology Center and the Oncology Institute in Gliwice (Poland), led by surgeon Adam Maciejewski, performed the second complete facial tissue transplant in Poland, reports The Daily Mail.

In May 2013, the same team successfully transplanted the face of a 33-year-old man who suffered a work-related injury. This time the patient was a 26-year-old girl named Joanna, who suffers from neurofibromatosis, a hereditary disease accompanied by the development of benign tumors along the nerves (neurofibroma). Due to the huge swelling of the facial tissues, the girl could not chew, swallow and speak.

On December 4, during a 23-hour operation, Ioanna received 80 percent of her facial skin. Who acted as a tissue donor is not reported. Now the girl is in a serious but stable condition.

The first successful facial tissue transplant in the world was performed on a French woman Isabelle Dinoir in November 2005. Since then, surgeons around the world have performed about two dozen such operations.
