From 2014, babies in the first year of life will be vaccinated against pneumococcal infection. According to the law adopted on December 10 by the State Duma of Russia in the first reading and in general, this vaccination is included in the Russian national calendar of preventive vaccinations from January 1 of next year. The text of the bill is posted on the portal of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
As stated in the explanatory note to the bill, "pneumococcus ranks first in the etiological structure of pneumonia and bacterial otitis in children of the first five years of life, third in morbidity among purulent bacterial meningitis and first in mortality among bacterial meningitis in children."
At the same time, mass vaccination reduces the incidence of pneumococcal meningitis and destructive pneumonia in children by 80%, while the incidence of pneumonia and otitis media decreases by 30-40%. In addition, mass vaccination reduces the incidence of pneumococcal disease among the unvaccinated population.
"In accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization, taking into account the existing immunization scheme against other infections within the framework of the National Calendar of Preventive Vaccinations, vaccination against pneumococcal infection can be given to children at the age of 7 and 9 months (twice), followed by revaccination (once) in the second year of life," - noted in the explanatory note to the document.
