American scientists have linked the development of obesity with a change in the normal composition of the intestinal microflora, Medical Xpress reports. The study was conducted by a team led by Richard A. Flavell of the Yale School of Medicine.

The work of Flavell and his colleagues was based on the results of earlier research, also carried out by scientists at Yale University. They studied the protein complexes of the inflammasome, which trigger inflammatory reactions upon contact with microbes.

The researchers found that the lack of two types of inflammasomes in mice led to dysbiosis in the form of an increase in one of the populations of microorganisms living in the intestine. As a result, these rodents more often developed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, accompanied by obesity.

Flavell's group also conducted a series of experiments on laboratory mice. During the study, it was found that mice are capable of infecting relatives with dysbiosis associated with a lack of inflammas. Thus, the predisposition to obesity was transmitted to previously healthy rodents.

The scientists also found that antibiotic therapy restored the normal microflora of mice and improved the course of hepatic dystrophy. In the next phase of work, Flavell plans to clarify which microorganisms contribute to the development of obesity and the accumulation of fat in the liver.
